Description of the webinar

Poverty, hunger and malnutrition in Africa are amplified by ineffective policies and a lack of leadership to drive policy implementation efforts. This must change if the continent is to achieve an increased understanding, uptake and implementation of policy that is impactful, coherent, and inclusive to attain food and nutrition security. Independent policy research institutions, such as local and regional think tanks, are in a unique position to enhance public policy debates and promote more objective, evidence-based decision-making that makes real, sustained improvements in people’s lives. In sub-Saharan Africa, the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), a regional multi-stakeholder policy research and advocacy think tank, is at the heart of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources (FANR) policy development and leadership. FANRPAN has an unparalleled legacy within the food, agriculture and natural resources policy space in sub-Saharan Africa with several success stories that span across contexts and spheres of governance. In this seminar, Ms Mwamakamba will reflect on FANRPAN’s vast experience of policy influence to promote an on-going interdisciplinary global dialogue on how to drive transformational change in agri-food systems in Sub Saharan Africa.

Overview of the GCRF-AFRICAP Programme

GCRF-AFRICAP is a major programme to make agriculture and food production in sub-Saharan Africa more productive, sustainable and resilient to climate change. Working with local organisations and governments in Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia, we are creating an evidence base to underpin new country-specific policies in agriculture and food production
